Why Visit Krakow for a City Break

Krakow is widely considered one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in Europe. Unlike many cities that were heavily damaged during the war, Krakow’s historic centre survived almost entirely intact. Today, walking through the Old Town feels like stepping into a living museum of medieval architecture, cobbled streets and grand squares.

At the heart of the city lies Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. Surrounded by historic townhouses, cafés and street performers, it’s the kind of place where you can sit for hours and simply watch the rhythm of the city unfold. Just a short walk away, the magnificent Wawel Castle rises above the Vistula River, offering one of the most iconic views in Poland.

But Krakow isn’t only about beautiful architecture. It’s also a city deeply connected to European history. A visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is one of the most powerful and important experiences you can have while travelling in Poland. The site serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, helping visitors understand the tragic events of World War II.

Beyond history, Krakow is also a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding region. Just a couple of hours away you’ll find the mountain town of Zakopane, famous for its wooden architecture, alpine scenery and access to the breathtaking Tatra Mountains. Here you can relax in the thermal pools of Chochołowskie Termy, take a cable car up Gubałówka for panoramic views, and experience traditional Polish highlander culture.

Krakow also stands out for its atmosphere. The city is lively but never overwhelming. Cafés spill into historic streets, local restaurants serve traditional Polish dishes, and hidden courtyards reveal unexpected bars and galleries. Whether you’re visiting for history, culture, food, or scenery, Krakow manages to offer all of it in one compact and walkable destination.

For travellers looking for a city break that combines history, culture, and unforgettable nearby excursions, Krakow is hard to beat.
